| Springfield,
Virginia native Eric Jao aka DJ Enferno has emerged
as 'hands down' the best turntablist to come out of the Washington,
DC area
ever. This hobbyist turned mix-DJ has most recently achieved
a US DMC Championship in his career of technical advancement,
self-discovery and redefinition.
Enferno
began his DJ career in 1991 and continued his journey at the
University of Virginia (UVA), where he dominated the dance-party
scene for 4 years, and pioneered the "dance-format" at
traditionally "rock-oriented" Fraternity parties. Enferno
accomplished all this while obtaining a BS in Commerce at
UVA's own McIntire, one of the top undergraduate business
programs in the country.
Enferno
(IT professional by day, club DJ by night) has built a reputation
as "a master of crowd control", blending the best contemporary
hip-hop and party classics.
1998
introduced Enferno to the art of Turntablism. Endless
hours of practice established Enferno in the local DJ battle arena
and in the up-and-coming DC area turntablist crew, The Trooperz.
Since then, Enferno has become a 7-time US Finalist in the nation's
most prestigious DJ competitions, including the world-famous Technics
DMC DJ Championships. Noticed by the Allies Crew (the
most decorated turntablist crew in history), Enferno was one of
12 competitors (in all of the US and Canada) invited to compete
in the 2002 Allies All-Star Beatdown, Later that year, Enferno
became the first DC DJ to place in a national competition, securing
3rd place at the ImportXpressions US Finals.
2003:
the Year of Enferno. In 2003, Enferno would advance to
3 more national championships (Chicago DMC champion, DC Koolmixx
Champion, and DC ImportXpression Champion). Enferno also traveled
north to compete against New York's top turntablists in the June
"Braggin Rites" battle, where he did what no other
DC DJ has done before: win in New York City. Fresh off that unprecedented
victory, DJ Enferno accomplished the unthinkable
"After
a blistering six-minute set of hip-hop, funk and old school, DJ
Enferno (aka Eric Jao of Springfield), was named the DMC/Technics
U.S. DJ Champion on Saturday night at Nation. He'll represent the
United States at the World DJ Championships in London next month
.Jao
is the first Washington area DJ to take first place, according to
DMC
He's also believed to be the only local DJ to make two
(DMC) national finals in a row."
Fritz Hahn - The Washington Post Weekend Section August
22, 2003
So
how does he do it?
Enferno,
also a skilled pianist, prides himself on the ability to blend technical
skill with musical composition. Enferno's sets are heavily influenced
by his mix-DJ background, taking the listener on a musical journey.
His sets showcase a combination of trick-mixing, blends, and live
acappella remixes, as well as his title-winning DMC sets.
Whether performing at a rave, club, or concert venue, Enferno never
fails to take the crowd for a ride.
DJ
Enferno isn't stopping anytime soon. After over a decade, this
DJ is still making history. The latest trophies are US ImportXpression
